Euchre is played with a deck of 24 standard playing cards, with two teams of 2 players each.

During the bidding phase (ordering up the trump suit), a player declares that their team intends to win the majority of tricks in the hand. A single point is scored if the team takes three or four tricks, and two points are earned if the team takes all five tricks. Failure to win three tricks is referred to as being “euchred,” and the opposing team is penalized with two points.

A caller with strong cards can “go alone” (play solo), in which case the caller tries to win the hand without a partner. The partner of the caller in a lone hand does not play, and if the caller succeeds in winning all five tricks, the winning partners score 4 points. If only three or four tricks are taken during a lone hand, then only one point is earned. If euchred while playing alone, the opposing team still receives only 2 points.

The primary rule to remember while playing Euchre is that one is never required to play the trump suit (unless leading it), but one must follow suit if possible.
